沙发的起源可追溯到公元前2000年左右的古埃及，但真正意义的软包沙发则出现于十六世纪末至十七世纪初。当时的沙发主要用马鬃、禽羽、植物绒毛等天然的弹性材料作为填充物，外面用天鹅绒、刺绣品等织物蒙面，以形成一种柔软的人体接触表面。

保养使用：

①沙发放置在平整的地面上，四角底部最好垫放软垫，防止移动时损伤地板。

②使用前先用干净软布擦净沙发表面的尘埃以及污垢，若是牛皮革（真皮）制作，须在使用前先用护理剂轻擦沙发表面一至两遍（不要使用蜡质的护理品），这样在牛皮革（真皮）表面形成一层保护膜，使日后的污垢不易深入真皮毛孔。

③应避免在沙发上座面上跳动，以免局部受压后变形，影响使用。

④应避免带有锐角或刀具类器具接触表面，防止划伤面料。

⑤应避免阳光长时间照射沙发造成皮革面料变形而失去弹性，如遇常有阳光照射，应隔一段时间把几张沙发互调位置以防色差明显。
